{"id":468,"date":"2021-11-05T13:02:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-05T13:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/?p=468"},"modified":"2021-11-05T13:02:46","modified_gmt":"2021-11-05T13:02:46","slug":"do-we-really-have-safety-in-our-home-away-from-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/2021\/11\/05\/do-we-really-have-safety-in-our-home-away-from-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Do we really have safety in our home away from home?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Kent students have been protesting for Women\u2019s safety this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018A girl\u2019s night in\u2019 was organised on Wednesday, which saw a boycott of all clubs in Canterbury, including the on-campus club Venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Venue, which is owned by the Student Union, remained open on Wednesday night but reportedly lost out on \u00a327,000 from the boycott alone. They released a statement showing support for both the boycott and the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know people are worried about drink spiking and safety, we\u2019re determined to ensure you enjoy your night out\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a 108% increase in spiking in the past 3 years, and given the recent spiking allegation in club Chemistry, this week particularly has been about holding the University accountable for the role that they play in young women\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kent union also showed support by marching alongside women on campus in a protest organised by \u2018Kent Dance\u2019 and \u2018RespecttheNo\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zaid Mahmood, Vice President of UKCRespecttheNo, says: \u201cas a man, we all need to do better to become allies. We all deserve to feel safe in our home away from home\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The President of Kent Union, Aisha Dojhan, says: \u201cIt\u2019s a matter of showing students that we stand by them. We hear them.
