{"id":683,"date":"2022-02-11T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-11T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/?p=683"},"modified":"2022-02-11T08:34:32","modified_gmt":"2022-02-11T08:34:32","slug":"william-adams-japans-nautical-hero-from-gillingham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/2022\/02\/11\/william-adams-japans-nautical-hero-from-gillingham\/","title":{"rendered":"William Adams: Japan&#8217;s Nautical Hero from Gillingham"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today marks the annual celebration of Japan\u2019s National Foundation Day, the date Japan celebrates its culture on the day that the country was founded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Included in Japan\u2019s rich culture is the history of Will Adams, a merchant from the Kent Town of Gillingham and the first English person to set foot in Japan. After a brief stint being held as a prisoner, suspected of being a pirate, Adams\u2019 knowledge of western shipbuilding and nautical navigation appealed to future Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/interview-with-Sue_mixdown.mp3\"><\/audio><figcaption>Susan Haydock, has helped to establish William Adams essential status to Gillingham<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adams also posed a consistent issue to the Portugese Jesuit priests, who were unable to gain the favour of Shogunate Ieyasu as efficiently as Adams. Helping to establish the Red Seal guild of armed Japanese merchant ships, Adams also helmed four trading missions to Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adams, becoming a key figure in Ieyasu\u2019s court, was given the name Miura Anjin (meaning \u2018Pilot of Miura\u2019), and remained in the Japanese courts until his death in 1620. He married a Japanese woman and fathered two half Japanese children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Japan and Gillingham celebrate Adams\u2019 life and share huge cultural connections. The town of Gillingham is paired with the cities of Ito and Yokosuka, the latter of which holds a memorial to Adams. Two roads in Gillingham, Ito Way and Yokosuka Way, are connected by Will Adams Roundabout, with a Japanese style bridge in the centre of the roundabout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan also celebrates Miura Anjin Day every August.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks the annual celebration of Japan\u2019s National Foundation Day, the date Japan celebrates its culture on the day that the country was founded.
