{"id":923,"date":"2022-02-25T13:48:15","date_gmt":"2022-02-25T13:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/?p=923"},"modified":"2022-02-25T13:48:15","modified_gmt":"2022-02-25T13:48:15","slug":"less-than-4-of-police-force-are-lgbtq-in-kent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/2022\/02\/25\/less-than-4-of-police-force-are-lgbtq-in-kent\/","title":{"rendered":"Less than 4% of police force are LGBTQ+ in Kent"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police officers who identify as gay or lesbian make up less than 3% of the workforce in some constabularies across England and Wales, the first figures of<br>their kind suggest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other forces reported levels more than double this, according to snapshot<br>staffing figures obtained from police forces by the PA news agency under Freedom of Information (FOI) laws. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 2,494 officers are recorded as heterosexual, equating to 93.7% of the workforce where sexuality is recorded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"612\" height=\"391\" src=\"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/gaypolice.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-924\" srcset=\"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/gaypolice.png 612w, http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/gaypolice-300x192.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are 96 gay\/lesbian officers (3.6%), 64 bisexual officers (2.4%) and eight<br>who prefer to self-describe (0.3%). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief Inspector Lee Broadstock, co-chairman of the LGBT+ network representing gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans officers across the country, told PA: \u201cIf we\u2019re not representative of our communities then we don\u2019t understand that community.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There needs to be an understanding of what the communities need to give people an equitable police service.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total workforce, including those whose sexuality is unknown, is 3,930 officers. Some 66.9% of the workforce is described as male.
