{"id":933,"date":"2022-02-25T14:26:09","date_gmt":"2022-02-25T14:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/?p=933"},"modified":"2022-02-25T14:26:09","modified_gmt":"2022-02-25T14:26:09","slug":"last-years-eurovision-organiser-calls-for-russia-to-be-barred-from-2022-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/2022\/02\/25\/last-years-eurovision-organiser-calls-for-russia-to-be-barred-from-2022-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Last year\u2019s Eurovision organiser calls for Russia to be barred from 2022 event"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The organiser of last year\u2019s Eurovision Song Contest has called on its producers to stop Russia from participating in the upcoming competition over its invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dutch broadcaster Avrotros, which was involved in organising the 2021 event in Rotterdam, issued a statement in which its chief executive urged Europe to \u201cunite and show what we stand for\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this week, Ukrainian state broadcaster UA:PBC asked the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which produces Eurovision, to suspend Russia\u2019s membership and ban it from the 2022 contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Eurovision indicated it plans to allow Russia to compete in May, describing itself as a \u201cnon-political cultural event\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/eurovidion-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-937\" srcset=\"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/eurovidion-1024x576.png 1024w, http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/eurovidion-300x169.png 300w, http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/eurovidion-768x432.png 768w, http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/eurovidion-1536x864.png 1536w, http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentconnect\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/eurovidion-2048x1152.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In his statement, Avrotros chief executive Eric van Stade said that \u201cpersonally and also as director\u201d he no longer felt able to remain silent on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cThis is the time when Europe must unite and show what we stand for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr van Stade described Russian action in Ukraine as \u201ca gross violation of universal values\u201d including sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He concluded: \u201cI also ask other countries to speak out and call on the EBU to suspend Russia from EBU membership, so that they can no longer participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 66th edition of Eurovision is due to take place in Turin after Italian rock band Maneskin won the 2021 contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russia has not yet announced its act.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The organiser of last year\u2019s Eurovision Song Contest has called on its producers to stop Russia from participating in the upcoming competition over its invasion of Ukraine.
