11 Jailed for Life over Anti-Muslim Gujarat Massacre

From the 24 convicted for the Gulbarg Society killings, 12 have been jailed for seven years and one man for 10 years. The 2002 anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat saw more than 1000 people die, of which 69 people were hacked and burned to death by a mob. Bungalows and flats were burnt and robbed.

A fire on a train that killed 60 Hindus on pilgrimage sparked the attack.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the state chief minister at the time of the attack, has been criticised for not doing enough to stop the riots. He did not apologise for the riots, denying any wrongdoing. A panel of the Supreme Court did not prosecute him in 2013 due to insufficient evidence.

The trial began on 7th September 2009. It has taken 14 years to convict the Gujarat rioters.
