Arlene Foster met with Theresa May in Downing street today to discuss their plans for a Conservative and DUP deal. The leader of the DUP has affirmed that the party was ‘positively engaging with the Conservatives’ and was committed to ‘working in the national interest’. The DUP hopes that a deal will be concluded soon.
Commenting on the situation, former Conservative Prime Minister John Major expressed his concerns over the planned deal and especially about the implications of such a deal for the peace process in Northern Ireland, which he believes the government should play an impartial role in.
Although Theresa May left Downing street without commenting on the situation, sources claim that a deal has been largely agreed upon, with no outstanding issues remaining. Thus a formal deal can be expected either today or tomorrow. Thus, the Queen speech should not be delayed, as commentators initially expected.
