Figures revealing the number of crimes involving Facebook and Twitter from each UK police force last year have been published today by the Press Association.
According to Freedom of Information requests made by the Press Association, the vast majority of police forces have seen a rise in the number of incidents.
Kent, London Metropolitan and Greater Manchester Police had the largest number of crime reports related to Facebook alone, with twitter trailing far behind across the board.
Meanwhile forces such as the City of London, Lincolnshire and Cambridge have shown the lowest crime figures involving the near-ubiquitous social media sites.
Despite these figures, crimes involving Facebook and Twitter encompass a large range of possibilities of what constitutes a crime.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said: “The above details do not reflect the extent that social media was used as a tool in the commission of the offence.
“These types of social media may have only been used in the initial contact between an offender and a victim, or more extensively throughout the course of an offence.”
