There are few topics that spark as much of an online frenzy as Taylor Swift’s love life, and this recent development proved to be no exception. After 15 months of dating the 32 year old DJ and music producer, Calvin Harris (born Adam Richard Wiles), the pair’s relationship came to an end 2 weeks ago on apparently amicable terms, but new events have led the musician to feel “betrayed” and believe that she may have been cheating on him with The Night Manager actor Tom Hiddleston. The 26 year old singing sensation and 35 year old actor were seen dancing together passionately at the 2016 Met Gala back on May 2nd, but since Taylor and Calvin had separated half a month ago, pictures have now surfaced of the singer and Tom Hiddleston kissing and getting cozy on a beach in Rhode Island on June 15th.
Representatives of Harris say that he is unsure whether or not there was an overlap, when he was still with Swift, where she was perhaps engaging with Hiddleston. Sources say that the actor, as soon as he had met her at the gala, was infatuated and started courting her by sending her flowers and keeping in touch.
The singer receives constant criticism in her relationships, as some claim that she has too many boyfriends and between too short of a time span. Whether or not you agree with that statement, you might recognise some of Taylor’s most notable relationships:
Joe Jonas, July 2008-October 2008
Taylor Lautner, August 2009-November 2009
John Mayer, November 2009-February 2010
Jake Gyllenhaal, October 2010-December 2010
Conor Kennedy, July 2012-October 2012
Harry Styles, December 2012-January 2013
Calvin Harris, March 2015-June 2016
Tom Hiddleston, June 2016-present
The pair set off yesterday on Taylor’s private jet amidst all of this drama, leaving Calvin behind where he has since deleted all traces of his ex-girlfriend from his social media accounts. One of them being this tweet directed at her once gossip on Taylor and Tom began, which he quickly deleted along with any and all pictures of them together; in attempt to erase her entirely from his life perhaps. They have both, also, unfollowed each other on Twitter; which in this generation acts as the nail in the coffin of a relationship.
News of Hiddleswift or Swiddleston (depending on your preference or even interest on the topic) has, unsurprisingly, gone viral – prompting memes and other fan-created content, showing just how conflicted the world is over this news. Some are rushing to assume that Hiddleston, being a contender for the new James Bond, will somehow promote Taylor to sing the new theme song for the film. Others are branding this new relationship, despite being too fast of a move from the singer, completely fake and staged. Once the internet erupted with the news, so did the public’s reactions. Here are a few of the best ones, most of them brutally attacking Taylor’ infamous dating reputation:
It is interesting how much of an outcry Taylor Swift’s active love life creates when, arguably, she is just doing what any normal 20-something year old would do; date. When men do it, Leonardo DiCaprio for example is frequently spotted with model after model hanging off his arm, there is less of an attack on the individual. Miss Swift has commented on this issue herself during an interview with Vogue magazine, whilst reflecting on the media’s coverage and public scrutiny, claiming she is a “lightening rod for slut shaming” in a world where we are so eager to judge celebrities on their personal life.
Let’s hope she finds ‘the one’ soon, then!
