In 1970 Derbyshire bowler Alan Ward earned a place in the record books by dismissing four Sussex batsmen in four balls in the John Player Sunday League.

Also in 1970 Brazilian football legend Cafu was born. He went on to win the World Cup in 1994 and 2002.

In 1981 tennis player Anna Kournikova, one of the former glamour girls of the sport, was born. She twice won the Australian Open doubles with Martina Hingis.

In 1989 500-1 shot Terimon, ridden by Michael Roberts, finished second to the favourite Nashwan to become the highest-priced horse to be placed in the Derby at Epsom. The only other horse to finish in the first three at odds of more than 100-1 was the 200-1 shot Black Tommy in 1857.

In 1994 Brian Lara broke the world-record for the highest ever first-class cricket score when he hit an astonishing 501 for Warwickshire in a County Cricket Championship match against Durham.

In 2006 Wayne Rooney was passed fit to play in the Germany World Cup after he recovered from his infamous metatarsal injury.
