Abdul Fattah al-Sisi Declared Egypt’s New President

Former Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has won the Egyptian Presidential Election by a huge majority.

He has come to be known as Egypt’s saviour and has promoted revolutionaries behaviour by promising to restore stability by achieving “freedom” and “social justice”.

Mr Sisi rose to fame when he personally announced overthrowing the former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi.

Despite his many promises and what appears to be an optimistic future for Egypt; Mr Sisi’s behaviour has come under question.

He has been known to detain journalists and secular activists.

Most recently he has defended the army’s use of virginity tests on woman detainees stating they were done to protect women from rape and solider’s from false allegations.

The main issue according to the British Foreign Secretary, William Hague is the possible promotion of freedom of expression.

Regardless of his landslide victory, the April 6 Youth Movement stated that they will “not support a military personality in the presidential elections; in January 2011 we demanded a civilian democratic state”.

There are many concerns in relation to Mr Sisi delivering the democracy that Egyptians have fought for throughout the years.

Many fear that a Sisi presidency would signal a dangerous return to a state dominated by the army.
