What we know about the man who allegedly killed Jo Cox

On Thursday 16th June, labour MP Jo Cox was savagely murdered outside a library in West Yorkshire.

The alleged gunman is reported to have shouted ‘’Britain first’ before opening fire.

The suspect, Thomas Mair is being described as a secluded ‘loner’, the typical stereotype of anti-social criminals that commit similarly devastating crimes. It has been reported, with records obtained from the Sothern Poverty Law Centre that Mair is said to have purchased a ‘munitions handbook’ with specific instructions on how to make a pipe pistol. This manual was being sold in 1999 by the National Alliance, a white supremacist, neo-nazi organisation. This is where issues surrounding Mair’s determinations arise.

It is under speculation whether Mair’s actions were pre-meditated in a dedication to archaic prejudices or whether it was a random attack conducted by a mentally unstable individual.

Mair’s brother has expressed sentiments that declare Thomas as a ‘’non-violent man’’. The statements from the suspect’s brother appear to offer an alternative view of the seemingly deeply unstable introvert. Thomas’s brother also had this to say, ‘we are struggling to believe what has happened. My brother is not a violent man and is not that political’.

Thomas is reported to have lost both his mother and grandmother and lived alone in the same property for almost 30 years, on his own.
