Dame Karen Pierce has been named as the UK’s ambassador in Washington, she will be the first woman to ever hold the position. Pierce is already in America serving as the permanent representative of the UK to the United Nations since March 2018.

Her appointment comes after her predecessor Sir Kim Darroch was forced to resign after his critical emails about Donald Trump leaked.

In a press release from the UK government Dame Karen Pierce said: “I am honoured to have been asked to represent the UK in the US. I think it is the UK’s single most important relationship. There is a deep bond between Britain and the US, built on many pillars.”

She will officially start the position when appointment is formally agreed to by Washington.
