Our lives are completely irrelevant to [the government].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rosie added that shielders were crying out for help and support, but they were being ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kerry Bell, 56, is also someone whose health conditions meant she had to shield during the first lockdown. She said: \u201cI\u2019ve had to come back to work obviously because without the government\u2019s support of people to shield, we\u2019ve got no option.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"507\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/InvictaNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MEJslK9--507x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-872\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/InvictaNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MEJslK9--507x1024.jpg 507w, https:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/InvictaNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MEJslK9--149x300.jpg 149w, https:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/InvictaNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MEJslK9--500x1010.jpg 500w, https:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/InvictaNews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MEJslK9-.jpg 594w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/><figcaption>Kerry Bell<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>She said she felt as if she had been \u201cthrown under a bus\u201d due to the lack of government support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s scary and I don\u2019t honestly think the government are taking it seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>62% of those who were advised by the government to shield reported that they were fully following official advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kerry added that she felt the uncertainty about shielding had left extremely clinically vulnerable people\u2019s mental health \u201cmore compromised\u201d then when shielding was enforced by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve noticed that mental health issues have grown amongst shielders since we got out of lockdown \u2013 it\u2019s absolute terrifying,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ONS statistics found 35% of those shielding said their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/healthandsocialcare\/conditionsanddiseases\/bulletins\/coronavirusandshieldingofclinicallyextremelyvulnerablepeopleinengland\/28mayto3june2020\">mental health had gotten worse<\/a> during the coronavirus pandemic. The figures also showed that almost 34% of disabled adults in Great Britain, who make up a large portion of the shielding population, reported<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/healthandsocialcare\/disability\/datasets\/coronavirusandthesocialimpactsondisabledpeopleingreatbritainmay2020\"> high levels of anxiety<\/a> at the beginning of July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James Taylor, Executive Director of Strategy, Impact and Social Change at disability equality charity Scope, said: \u201cWe urge the government to provide more detail and accessible advice about the renewed form of shielding. The guidance for people, who are at most risk from Coronavirus, to minimise social contact and take precautions is vague at best.\u201d \u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He adds: \u201cDisabled people felt forgotten by Government during the first wave and must not be abandoned now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent survey by Scope revealed that a fifth of disabled people will not leave their homes until a vaccine is found.
