Local baker Kat becomes the real breadwinner
In honour of this particular week, ’Mrs Sourdough bakery’ located on Chatham High street details their experience with operating a bakery in Medway. This bakery has been open since August 2021.
The national baking week is here! Annually, from Friday the 14th of October to Thursday the 20th the UK brings awareness to encourage people of all abilities to get into the kitchen and bake at home.
Kat’s origin for starting her bakery in Medway came from when she moved to Maidstone then struggled to locate fresh sourdough bread and began to bake her own.
Takacs mainly baked Sourdough loaves and occasionally other desserts for her friends, family, and local neighbours. Her baked goods gained traction then the demand from shops wanting to sell her bread started to increase.
The requests were enough encouragement for Kat to open ‘Mrs Sourdough Bakery’ as “it was hard to say no” to customers and her love for baking grew stronger.
Many Takacs customers travel from Maidstone, Rochester, and Faversham to purchase fresh goods from the bakery.
Kat’s most beloved food to bake is her sourdough bread as “That is the reason why she started” as well as finding it her best-selling product. The Vanilla cheesecake is also a customer favourite.
‘Mrs sourdough bakery’ does not meet many competitors as, throughout Medway, there has been a decrease in the figure of bakeries remaining open. Mainly due to the cost of living crisis as businesses are struggling to keep up against the increase of bills”.
Kat finds that operating a bakery in Medway follows with difficulties as “it is hard being more expensive than other businesses” as her products are priced higher.
Kat’s pastries have a starting price of £3.00 and range to £5.10 for loaves of bread.
Takacs is not too apprehensive about this as she regularly gets visited by her loyal customers and is aware that they are also willing to continue to travel from various towns in Kent to dine at her bakery.
