Local businesses will be potentially affected by blackouts

Gillingham is home to over 108,000 people and also the home to over 23,000 local businesses, 87% of them being small businesses.

A plan, created by the Government, as a last resort if the country is unable to import enough gas from Europe is that they may have to ration or even black out homes and businesses in the UK to reserve energy.

I went to Gillingham High Street and approached a few local businesses about the potential plans with the question of whether it’ll affect their business if it does proceeds.

Dr. Anthony who owns the Unistar African shop said he “cannot open the shop without energy” and Mark Smith who owns The Bike Warehouse, on the other hand, said, “he’ll work around it for the better of the country”.

Gillingham is filled diverse culture and community and enriched with history and the local businesses is what builds the culture. To see them potentially close down permanently will be saddening.

As we currently know, the Government has no plans to proceed with the energy blackouts plan as they try to preserve gas.

The Government urges those to unplug household electrical’s like TVs, computers, and cookers to reserve energy.
