Outrage over “traffic chaos” in Rainham town centre

Traffic in Rainham, Kent has become a “disgrace” according to local residents.
Currently the area is undergoing multiple major developments, including road, gas and water works, all at the same time.
This has caused mayhem amongst road users, with many people’s journeys almost tripling in time.
There are several newbuild developments being built currently and residents worry this will only add to the problem.
Samantha Louise took to Facebook expressing her anger and said: “I get that the world moves on housing shortages etc. but Rainham does not have the infrastructure for any more homes. I’ve took what should be a 20-minute car journey today that’s taken 2 hours because of road closures and not a work man in sight. There is no point in any of us complaining if no one is doing anything… I would go to our MP but he’s a total waste of space.”
“The current traffic chaos is also due to the A249 and A2 junction closures, but work has now been delayed. Traffic is currently being diverted through the center of Rainham and into Newington, where there are also more roadworks.
Kim Ready lives in Rainham believes the new houses are going to make the situation even worse. She said: “They’re building lots of houses that have no primary schools in walking distance and if they do have a school nearby they’re full. This means that families are having to drive their children to schools further away which adds to the rush hour traffic. It’s the same with shops and facilities, there are houses for 1200 more families but nowhere nearby for them to go, so they have to drive.”
Members of the public are asking Medway Council to put a stop to more new build developments.
