Medway couple weighs up renovating home despite rising raw material and energy costs

Work is underway
Extensions and building works can be a significant expense, exacerbated more recently by rising costs or raw materials and energy.
So, what’s it like having renovations done during the rising cost of living?
Peter and Julia Fillier are a couple from Parkwood, Kent, who decided they wanted to make changes to the ground floor of their semi-detached home back in January 2022.
After quotes were gathered and plans drawn up, work finally began in January 2023.
Since wanting to make changes at the beginning of last year, material costs have increased by up to 25%.
Did these rising costs impact their thoughts on the renovation?
Peter Fillier said: “We recognised the costs were going up.
“You’ve only got to look at the news, and look at how much inflation is, to know that costs are going up.
“But we had a budget, and we had a price in our mind as to what we thought was reasonable for our plans.”
Building work is now underway, and the couple have been looking to make savings of their own.
Julia Fillier said: “We’ve used less heating because for some of the work we’ve had to have it switched off.”
