The Peace Doves Artwork at Rochester Cathedral

The Artwork ‘Peace doves; by Peter Walker magnificently transformed Rochester Cathedral in aim to bring our community together.
Almost 15’000 individually handmade paper doves were used to make the artwork, in order to spread the message of peace and hopefulness. As a whole, the piece represents coming together in unity and peace with high hopes for a better future.
As it journeys throughout the UK, the artwork Peace Doves has been organised for various settings, For example in Liverpool, Lichfield, Derby, Sheffield, and now Rochester.
People from all over our community have individually inscribed messages of peace and hope onto each dove as part of the Peace Doves initiative, which has included educational engagement with several local schools and community organisations.
Events like this aim to build our community, particularly during difficult times. Such occasions are almost essential in maintaining a positive attitude throughout communities.
Sue Brewer, a clergy member of Rochester Cathedral, told our reporter Diana Galan how essential these activities are:
“Many people are going to visit the doves and it’s a fantastic opportunity for us to meet people and it makes the cathedral look like a place that is secure and accepting which is our ultimate objective. Our cathedral should be a safe haven where individuals may express their hopes and anxieties.”
The Rochester Cathedral is a symbol of community, and the Peace Doves initiative emphasises the need of togetherness even more.
