In a speech at Lancaster House, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps warned that the era of the “peace dividend” is over, citing an increasingly dangerous world with rising threats from China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and terrorist groups.

Shapps emphasised the need for increased defence spending, pushing for the UK’s goal to raise it to 2.5% of GDP, up from the current target of 2%.

He highlighted the importance of supporting Ukraine and urged allied nations to bolster their defence budgets.

Shapps announced the UK’s commitment of 20,000 personnel to a major NATO military exercise and emphasised the need for collective action in the face of evolving geopolitical challenges.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak affirmed the UK’s support for Ukraine, while Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer expressed solidarity, emphasising the UK’s commitment to stand with Ukraine.
