Stephen Clemence has made his first signing as Gillingham manager with the capture of Swindon Town right back Remeao Hutton on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.
The 25-year-old, who can also be deployed as a wing-back, had enjoyed an impressive spell with the Robins, having grabbed 12 assists last season in League Two in 44 appearances.
He joins the Gills having made 27 starts at the County Ground in the first half of the season with one goal and six assists to his name.
Hutton will be eligible for today’s fixture at Priestfield against Forest Green Rovers.
Speaking with the official Gillingham website after joining the club, Remeao said: “Everyone seems really friendly here so I can’t wait to get going. The new owners are looking to grow the club and I want to be a part of that.
“I know a few of the lads already so that was a factor in coming here. I want to create as many chances as possible.”
Head Coach Stephen Clemence added: “He is an athletic player who likes to get forward and his crossing from wide areas is superb.
“He will be a real asset to the team and we are very much looking forward to working with him.”
Hutton has also excited the Gills faithful with his ability to push forward from the back and create chances from the wide areas.
Supporter Ben Andrews said: “I think it’s a signing that we’ve been needing for a long time.
“We’ve had problems scoring goals over the past couple of years and I think part of that is down to the lack of crosses into the box.
“Hutton is one of the best wing backs in the league; in 2023 he had the 2nd most assists in England with 15, so if he can replicate that at Gillingham, hopefully we can start hitting the back of the net more often.”
Beginning his career in the Walsall academy, Hutton spent his early years with Sutton Coldfield Town and Hednesford Town before joining Birmingham City in 2017.
He made his professional debut on loan at Yeovil Town and after another loan with Stevenage, he joined Barrow on a permanent deal from Birmingham in 2021, having not made an appearance for the club in four years. Hutton made 44 appearances for the Bluebirds grabbing four assists before joining Swindon for an undisclosed fee last summer.
