Awards seasons had its fair share of scandal. From Director Brandy Corbet coming under fire with AI accusations in his nominated film The Brutalist to Emilia Pérez nominated film star Karla Sofia Gascón, whose resurfaced tweets showed racist views towards Muslims and people of colour. Although she has apologised for her tweets, some believe the damage may be insurmountable, damaging its chances of winning ‘Best Picture’ at the Oscars.

The film has also received backlash for its representation of Mexicans and the trans community.

Film critic and programmer Sarah Tai Black is unsure whether it is good trans representation, with people arguing that the obsession with the surgical procedure is harmful to those in the community who may not want that for themselves.

Grammy-nominated singer Selena Gomez, 32, also responded to criticism from Book of Life actor Eugenio Derbez, 32, who slammed the performance of her Spanish-speaking role in Emilia Pérez on TikTok in February.

The nominees for the 97th Oscars Awards are revealed. In the lead is Jacques Audiard’s bold musical Emilia Pérez, which has earned 13 nominations and is the most-nominated non-English language film in Oscars history. The film follows a Mexican cartel leader (Karla Sofia Gascón) who enlists a lawyer (Zoe Saldaña) to help the cartel leader disappear and transition into a woman. Gascón is the first transgender woman nominated for the Oscars, making history for the first time.
