Residents of Gillingham have taken to social media to express anger over the Highstreet overflowing with litter.
On Facebook, Jenny Wright commented: “I drive alone Luton Road every day, Gillingham high street look up market in comparison, I actually lock my doors before I get there…It’s sad our towns have become a dump!”

“Gillingham used to be the better part for shopping now nothing to go there for,” Susan Linnell commented.
Clifford Chiverton commented: “Unfortunately the town centre reflects on the attitudes of the people that live in Gillingham was on the lines, yesterday I saw two mums with three children having food from one of the chicken places just walked away from the remnants, if the adults can’t be bothered it very often reflects on the children’s behaviour.”
Medway Council has been contacted but they have not given a statement yet, but the spokesperson encouraged people who concerned to visit their website and report litter.

It says: “All council-maintained streets are allocated a regular cleansing schedule. For example, high streets are on a continuous daily cleanse.
“Residential streets are typically cleansed fortnightly.
“Majority of litter bins on the public highway are emptied 3 times per week, with others emptied more frequently.
“We’ll aim to get any syringes collected and disposed of by the end of the working day if reported by 4pm.
“Any person who is witnessed intentionally dropping, throwing or leaving rubbish, can be issued a fine for £150, or, if prosecuted, face a fine up to £2,500.”
