A newborn baby girl has been discovered at a park in Newham, wrapped in a shopping bag.
The baby was seen by a dog-walker in sub-zero temperatures at the East London park around 9:15pm on Thursday night.
The newborn was kept warm by the walker until emergency services arrived, an action which Ch Supt Simon Crick says “contributed to saving the baby’s life.”
He says: “Our thoughts now turn to the baby’s mother; we are extremely concerned for her welfare as she will have been through a traumatic ordeal and will be in need of immediate medical attention following the birth.”
“Trained medics and specialist officers are ready to support her and we urge her to get in touch by phone or walk in to the nearest hospital or police station.”
Since being found, it’s been confirmed that the baby girl is unharmed and safe in hospital.
However, officers are “extremely concerned” for the welfare of the newborn’s mother, urging her to “seek help by dialling 999.”
This is the third infant to be found in Newham since 2019, with a girl being left in the park in 2019, whilst a boy was left on the street in January 2020.
