{"id":445,"date":"2023-10-27T14:21:21","date_gmt":"2023-10-27T13:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentstandard\/?p=445"},"modified":"2023-10-27T14:21:53","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T13:21:53","slug":"kent-student-concerned-health-for-two-years-due-to-nhs-waiting-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentstandard\/2023\/10\/27\/kent-student-concerned-health-for-two-years-due-to-nhs-waiting-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent student concerned health condition for two years due to NHS waiting list"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Kent student has been avoiding making a call to the GP and a visit to the hospital despite having stomach issues for two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahmed Alhakem, student, university of Kent, has spent his two years in university worried about his health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentstandard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Mahima-student.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This comes as NHS waiting lists have hit a record high with almost 7.8 million people on hold for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile doctors fear with winter approaching, reducing the waiting times will be a challenge and warn it could go on for several years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the NHS waiting lists hitting a record high since 2007, Ahmed admits the fear of a long wait has kept him from seeking the care that he needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s not just Ahmed who\u2019s patiently waiting to see a doctor. According to NHS England, almost 9,000 patients have waiting more than 18 months for routine treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while the government blames the ongoing doctors strikes as playing a significant role in contributing to the delays, doctors disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Julian Spinks, general practitioner based in Medway, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/centreforjournalismprojects.co.uk\/kentstandard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/DOC.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, colleague voiced up this statement by a spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCutting waiting lists is one of the government\u2019s top priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve exceeded our target to deliver 10,00 virtual beds and are investing in an extra \u00a3200 million to support the NHS during winter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, doctors urge patients to continue to seek care if they are experiencing health concerns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Kent student has been avoiding making a call to the GP and a visit to the hospital despite having stomach issues for two years.
