Tenants at the Dockyard in Chatham have suggested plans to change the site into a business and enterprise campus.
Chatham’s Maritime Heritage has spanned over 400 years, but landowners Peel Waters intend to close Chatham Docks in 2025.
ArcelorMittal Kent Wire has been located at the Dockyard since 1988 and have projected a loss of 1,144 jobs both at the docks and through local supply chains if plans go ahead.
Managing Director, Matt Brooks says current plans could spell the end for many companies.
“I think the plan for Basin 3 is not ideal for the community. The company I work for got many investment plans take place in the future, as long as our facilities remain as it is,” he said.
Peel Waters expect the regeneration of the docks to create a minimum of 2,000 jobs and 4,000 new homes in the area, along with delivering more sustainable and energy efficient buildings whilst boosting local education.
Redevelopment aims to bring together key areas across Medway including St Mary’s Island, Gillingham Pier and Rochester.
Executive Director for Peel Waters, James Whittaker has called on campaigners against the proposal to consider the opportunities renovation will provide.
“Let’s embrace change, everything is positive you know you create more jobs, better investment, regeneration, better connectivity, more opportunities for businesses that do want to grow.
“Industries that actually will help complement the whole of Medway in terms of what the policy development have dropped in terms of creating a sustainable business in the community for everyone.”
The plans have now been validated and are awaiting a decision from the council following a period of public consideration and analysis from planning officers. Labour Council Leader Vince Maple met with tenants and Peel Waters last week, and it is expected that dialogue between the two parties will continue.
