Lovell looking forward to locking horns with old mate

Steve Lovell is relishing pitting his wits against his golfing mate Wally Downes when the Gills head to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday afternoon in SkyBet League 1.

AFC Wimbledon come in to the game off the back of three wins in the league and a win for the Wombles would leave them just two points behind the Gills at the bottom of League 1.

Looking ahead to the fixture, Lovell has emphasised the magnitude of the tie, he said: “We take confidence going in to Saturday. Looking at Saturday’s results it’s a massive game, its so close because two wins and you’ll be up the top. It’s a big game.”

Lovell and Downes exchanged many battles during the 1980’s as the two pitted their wits in Millwall V Wimbledon games, and Lovell is looking forward to coming up against Downes again, but this time in the dugout: “I’m looking forward to it, I’m going to meet my old mate Wally, I’m sure we will have a craic after the game but I’m sure he’ll be gloves on for the game on Saturday.”

Lovell added: ““We both want three points this weekend and will be trying our best in that couple of hours to get one over each other. At the end of the game we will have a chat and a lemonade and discus it all again, that is the way it is.”

Gillingham are going in to the game off the back of a Valuable point on the road at luton last week and are set to welcome back Alex Lacey – full match preview can be found by clicking here
