Medway Youth Council hold annual climate conference in MidKent College

MidKent College

Medway Youth Council held their annual climate conference at MidKent College on Wednesday. The conference highlighted the impact that climate change has had on our planet and what young people can do to make a difference.

The event was attended by students from Rowans AP academy and local councillors from Medway.

The aim of the conference was to educate young students about climate change and listen to their opinions on the issue.

Climate change has been a key issue that both major parties of the UK are aiming to tackle with both now pledging net zero Carbon emission before the year 2050 with Labour going as far as to say they will achieve that goal by the year 2030.

With Medway Council declaring a climate emergency April, Anna McGovern the chair of Medway Youth Council believes that they are now being heard.

Medway Labour Councillor and Chatham and Aylesford, Vince Maple believes it is vital for young students to be educated on climate change and for them to take part in climate debates.

He said: “We are here at Medway Youth Council annual Conference and they are talking about climate emergency so this is not an issue that is just important for politicians it is important for the community at large and it is important for young people.”
