Gillingham complete Akinde deal

Gillingham have confirmed the signing of Lincoln City striker John Akinde on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The 30-year-old has a fine scoring record in the lower leagues, having hit double figures for goals in the league in five of the last six seasons.

The Gills have been in desperate need of a striker, having scored just 29 goals in League One all season. Only four teams have scored fewer.

Gillingham’s current top scorer is on-loan Watford man Alex Jakubiak, who has netted just six times in League One. Akinde has scored five times in the league this season, despite the majority of his appearances coming from the bench.

Akinde said: “I’m excited to get started and performing for Gillingham. As a striker you want to score goals, as many as you can, and help the team win, so that’s my aim.”

The striker is also looking forward to working with Gillingham manager Steve Evans again, having played under him at Crawley Town, saying: “Obviously you know what you’re getting, he knows what he’s getting, and I look forward to working with him.”

Evans was delighted to get the deal over the line, and thanked his chairman, Paul Scally for bringing Akinde to the MEMS Priestfield Stadium. He said: “Give only credit to my Chairman, Paul Scally, and the big man himself.

“My boss has been terrier like, but outstanding, and got a player I wanted back in the summer, but now he is here.”
