Broadstairs Folk week began over 50 years ago, as Jack Hamilton wanted to revive and celebrate the traditions of English folk music and dance in the Southeast. He settled in the perfect seaside town in Broadstairs and expanded ‘The Folk Show’. Due to Hamilton, funding and sponsorship came from the district Council, and in the early 70’s the festival became well known in the folk world. This secured extra grants and sponsorships, and even a Development grant from the Arts Council, meaning more workshops and dance events were added to the festival.

Although, Broadstairs folk week in a non-profit organisation with an amazing army of volunteers who make sure the week runs smoothly. However, it also makes a significant impact into the local economy, following an independent survey in 2012 estimating a £2.3 million gain from the week of events.

Despite Folk week being cancelled for the first time ever in 2020, due to the pandemic, in 2021, there were many reincarnations that still made it possible to enjoy the week whilst still be able to social distance.

Folk fans are making their way from all over the UK to Broadstairs this week to see their favourite bands and be reunited with friends that they haven’t seen since before the virus.
