What do you say to a British Independence Day?

A request for a UK Independence Day was quashed earlier this week by MPs in a Westminster Hall debate. It was decided another bank holiday would be too expensive after the Diamond jubilee cost businesses a billion pounds.

More than 20,000 people signed a petition on the Government’s website backing the idea of a UK independence day.

The request followed Britain’s decision to leave the European Union earlier this year.

But Brexit Minister Robin Walker has now confirmed that there a no current plans for the proposed national holiday on June 23rd

Polictics postgraduate Becky Earl said: “The concept of a British independence day fails to acknowledge the cultural links that will still remain with Europe even after Brexit has taken place.

“It feels like nothing much will change even after Brexit happens. Because in the interest of trade regulations for industries will probably still remain the same.”

“So really, the British independence day would only mark the day in which Britain muted itself much from one of the world’s largest single markets.”
