Arsenal and Wolves win as United stutter

It was a mixed night for the British sides in the Europa League last night as 5 teams were in action.

Wolves bagged their first Europa League win of the campaign via a Willy Boly 93rd minute winner in their 1-0 win over Besiktas in Istanbul.

Both teams lost their opening Group K games two weeks ago and have won just one league game all season, making this tie a much-win for both sides.

Wolves kept Besiktas at bay for most of the match, rendering them to just 1 shot on goal before Boly hit the winner to give Wolves their first points of their Europa League campaign.

Manchester United on the other hand weren’t so lucky as they were held to an uninspiring 0-0 draw with AZ Alkmaar.

United failed to register a shot on target in the game as their run without an away win in all competitions has extended to 10 games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer went with the youth against the Dutch side, starting 17-year old striker Mason Greenwood, 19-year old midfielder Angel Gomes and 20-year old full-back Diego Dalot.

United may have to count their lucky stars that they left Holland with a point as they had to rely on David De Gea to make a series of second-half saves to keep them from going behind.

Gabriel Martinelli scored two goals and set another one as Arsenal thrashed Standard Liege 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

New signing Kieran Tierney impressed from left-back and set up Martinelli’s first goal with a low cross that the Brazilian headed in.

Joe Willock added a third to make it 3-0 in the opening 22 minutes before Dani Ceballos scored the fourth in the second half.

That result keeps Arsenal top of Group F, three points ahead of 2nd placed Standard Liege.

Scottish champions Celtic eased to a 2-0 home win over Romanian side CFR Cluj that gave Celtic their first Europa League win of the season.

Goals from Odsonne Edouard and Mohamed Elyounoussi ensured revenge was served from the Scottish side as just seven weeks ago, Celtic lost in Glasgow by Cluj, as a 4-3 Champions League defeat saw Celtic lose 5-4 on aggregate which saw them miss out on the Champions’ League group stages for the second season running.

Their Scottish rivals Rangers didn’t fare as well as they lost 2-1 to Young Boys courtesy a Christian Fassnacht last minute strike in their Group G meeting.

Alfredo Morelos opened the scoring for the visitors a minute before the break with his 14th goal in just 13 starts this season.

Just five minutes after the break, Roger Assale equalised for Young Boys before their winner which was the last kick of the game.

Rangers now drop to third in Group G after Porto’s defeat at Feyenoord.
