As Leicester nears 30 weeks in lockdown, locals and MPs grow angry at the government response

As the city of Leicester fast approaches it’s 30th week in lockdown, locals are struggling to comprehend why it is taking the government so long to take control of the situation.

A local lockdown was enforced on Leicester on 30 June. It meant that non-essential retail in the City was forced to close once again. Restrictions are still imposed on locals too, with guidelines restricting meeting outside of households and private gardens.

There has been confusion for the Leicester people of what the actual law is. Sunny Gill said: “I was so lost when the local lockdown was enforced – I didn’t know what we were allowed to do and what we weren’t. The government gave us no clear direction.”

Sunny goes on to say that they thought that even the government wasn’t sure of the laws they were imposing on Leicester.

Jonathon Ashworth MP for Leicester South said in a statement: “The City, its businesses and its people had suffered a great deal”.

Mr Ashworth added that government had failed in being clear to the people of Leicester. “Unclear messaging, or the lack of communication, has been constant during this time.”

Jito Kaur hasn’t seen her grandchildren in months because of the unclear messaging. She said: “I am scared to leave the house for fear of breaking the laws. I miss my grandchildren a lot.”

Leicester’s restrictions on people’s social contact are still enforced to date.

Mr Ashworth remains “unclear” on why restrictions were imposed in Leicester in the first place. “The infection rate in Leicester is far lower than that in Exeter and Nottingham, neither of which are subject to any restrictions,” he said.

Mr Ashworh said that the government is “failing” Leicester because the City has been deprived of its freedoms without knowing what is happening and what is needed for the restrictions to be lifted.

The people of Leicester are still waiting for the situation to be reviewed
