Tina Turner revolutionised music in the 1980’s and redefined what it meant to be a female artist whilst overcoming racial boundaries. She has left her mark as one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, with 11 Grammy Award wins.

The new stage production, Tina: The Musical, opens tonight at the Aldwych Theatre in London, and will show until October 2018. The musical explores her life through her much loved songs. The tale of her becoming the Queen of Rock is told including her struggles through racism and domestic abuse.

The director of the musical, Phyllida Lloyd, explains her close connection with the show,”This is the first time in 17 years that a musical project has got me in the guts like this.” Lloyd went on to explain her draw to stories about women struggles overcoming insuperable odds. Lloyd says, “I think all of us working on it feel like little guardian angels of her legacy.”

In an interview with the director, Tina Turner expresses her hope for the show, saying, “I hope that it will travel the world and serve what the people need from me as a reminder of my work.”
