Premier League Preview: Klopp and Guardiola face-off
by Callum McAvoy, reporter
A potential title decider tops off what should be a thrilling and action-packed weekend of Premier League football, as Liverpool take on Manchester City at Anfield.
The two favourites for the title, sit at the top of the table, separated only by goal difference.
And with the four fixtures between them last season producing an astonishing 18 goals, there is every reason to believe that this game will have huge ramifications for the Premier League.
The game on Sunday, the last before the international break, sees managers Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola reigniting their old rivalry which began five years ago in the Bundesliga where they managed Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich respectively.
Klopp has won eight of their 14 encounters but is still wary of the challenge faced.
The German coach said: “They have my respect, for sure.
“We have to be spot on, on our best to keep them away from our goal and create chances in front of our goal.”
Guardiola is equally mindful of what the opposition can do: “Liverpool is one of two greatest teams in England. We try to be close to them.
“Liverpool beat a lot of sides not just City last season.”
Another manager feeling the pressure is Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese is facing increasing scrutiny following a string of disappointing results including being knocked out of the Carabao Cup to Championship side Derby.
United having won at Old Trafford since the opening day of the season and all eyes will be on the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ as his side host Newcastle on Saturday night.
The Magpies are yet to win this season but with Mourinho’s old foe Rafa Benítez in their dug out, all bets are off, with many speculating that this could well be Mourinho’s last game.
For his part the Portuguese was incredibly muted in this morning’s press conference.
When questioned why his team were in such bad form, he replied: “For many different reasons.”
When asked if he could elaborate, he said: “No.”
Elsewhere, the weekend’s fixtures kick off tonight as struggling teams Brighton and West Ham clash at 8pm.
High flying Chelsea and Arsenal will hope to have fully recovered from their hard-fought Europa League wins last night when they face off against Southampton and Fulham respectively on Sunday.
Like City and Liverpool, Chelsea also remain undefeated this season under new manger Maurizio Sarri and look set to continue this streak.
Unai Emery’s Arsenal have now won eight games across all competitions, with the Gunners now looking settled and very comfortable with their Spaniards management.
Winless Cardiff travel to Wembley to play Spurs who are looking to bounce back from their embarrassing midweek defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League.
Huddersfield are also hoping to claim their first three points of the season when they take on Burnley, while in-form Wolves will fancy their chances when they journey to a Crystal Palace side who are yet to score at home this season.
And to top it off, there are several important midtable battles with Leicester playing Everton and Bournemouth up against Watford, as teams vie to be the best of the rest.
