Universities urged to be more open with drug abuse

by Reem Makari, reporter

Parents who tragically lost two sons to drug overdoses are urging universities to take drug problems with students more seriously by taking a more open approach.

Following the unfortunate death of two brothers at the University of Sheffield from an ecstasy overdose, the students’ parents are calling for universities to be more open with their students. Mr Lakeman said to the BBC, “I don’t condone drug-taking but I know it happens. Universities need to be open and honest.”

Turning Point, a local drug rehab centre in Medway is working on this approach with nearby students. They are taking a ‘non-judgemental approach’ where students have the option of being assessed either in the university or outside or they can just be referred to the rehab centre over the phone.

A spokesperson from Turning Point said: “If it’s coming from the staff it can be less threatening and intimidating than the university staff.”
