EXCLUSIVE: Man who filmed Ryanair racist tirade calls for boycott of airline

by Emma Rae Woodhouse, reporter

The passenger who filmed the racial abuse hurled at an elderly disabled lady on board a Ryanair flight has told Kent Current how he has joined forces with the victim’s family.

David Lawrence shared a video of a man calling an elderly lady on the seat next to him an “ugly f****** c***” and an “ugly black b******”, which was then shared over 75,000 times receiving over seven million views.

Mr Lawrence blamed the entire incident on Ryanair and has spent the days following the incident trying to get justice for the victim who has been identified as Delsie Gayle.

“Ryanair are responsible totally for this, he said.

“Some might say well they are not responsible for the man’s actions but they are certainly responsible for what takes place in their aircraft, and I’m sure they’ve got or they should have had some kind of policy in place to deal with these kind of incidents.

“There was none. This man was allowed to continue to rant freely racial abuse at her and any other black passengers that were there.

“There was no one there on Ryanair’s part to quash the situation, to control the situation or anything.”

The charity worker described his utmost shock that the family of those involved in the incident had not been contacted by the budget airline to offer an apology or any other form of condolence.

Since the flight, Mr Lawrence from Rochester, Kent, has devoted his time to getting Mrs Gayle justice from Ryanair which he believes she deserves.

“I would like to see a full investigation into this, a criminal investigation, it’s not just about this man, we’re talking about a wider issue here in British society; an underlying racism that is still present in British people that needs to be addressed.

“We need to look at it. We need to have that conversation because it’s obvious that it hasn’t gone away.”

Just days after the flight Mr Lawrence reached out to the lady in question and said he was welcomed with many hugs and kisses.

“It was great seeing them again. Hugs and kisses all round. In fact they weren’t answering their door, because they had been inundated with media at their door but when they found out I was outside they opened the door and they welcomed me in. It was great. So great.”

However Mr Lawrence said Mrs Gayle was still very traumatised by the events.

“It’s not something that’s going to go away for her, she has to re-live that situation on a daily-basis, there’s no help for her, there’s been no offers of trauma support she’s received nothing.

“No letters, no phone calls from Ryanair, nothing. Nobody official has contacted the woman or the family, I can’t believe it.”

Mr Lawrence said that both families were joining forces against Ryanair.

He said: “There is a boycott that is now being campaigned of Ryanair and we totally support that. We are not going away until Ryanair does the right thing. “Ryanair just doesn’t care.”

Since the incident occurred Essex police have issued a statement saying they are “progressing a number of enquiries.” Meanwhile a GoFundMe page has been set up by sympathisers who rushed to the aid or Mrs Gayle and her family after Mr Lawrence’s video was shared hundreds of thousands of times.
