Sinead O’Connor has converted to Islam, and has taken the name Shuhada Davitt.

The singer, famous for ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ posted the news last night on Twitter, in a series of posts including her reciting the Azan, the Islamic Call to Prayer. 

The Islamic Community has welcomed Shuhada with open arms, with Dr. Yasir Qadhi saying, “May Allah bless you Sr. Shuhada!  

“As a child of the 80s I grew up listening to your lyrics, & I watched live in the 90’s when you expressed your anger at the Pope for the abuse scandal by tearing up his picture! I always felt you were a deeply religious person. Salam & welcome!” 

Shuhada legally changed her name last year to Magda Davitt, and in 1992 sparked controversy when she ripped up a photograph of Pope John Paul II live on US television.
