Pumpkin farmers gear up for busiest day of the year

Today is National Pumpkin Day and for the last week pumpkin farms have been flooded with people looking to find the perfect pumpkin to carve.

Over 2,000 people have walked through the gates every single day for the last week. This is easily the busiest week in every pumpkin farmer’s calendar.

Farmer Charles Eckles, from Pumpkin Moon in Maidstone, planted over 80,000 pumpkin seeds in preparation for this time of year. Thanks to the unseasonably hot weather over the summer, the pumpkins have been thriving.

Along with pumpkin picking, Charles says he wants to encourage people to not just carve their pumpkins but to eat them as well. He has planted squash along with the pumpkins to encourage this.

“When you’re looking at picking a pumpkin, get a squash to go with your pumpkin. You can then mix the two fleshes together and you will get a much more flavourful meal.”

Pumpkin Moon will be open for pumpkin picking as well as other fun activities like pumpkins painting until the 28th of October.
