Original programming to thank for Netflix’s record breaking subscriber numbers

Netflix have announced a record growth in their membership gaining 8.8 million members in the last three months of 2018.

The streaming service now has more than 139 million subscribers, and the company put their success down to original programming.

Original film Bird Box was watched by 80 million accounts within its first four weeks on the platform.

Other original shows like Black Mirror, You and Sex Education have also spurred success.

It’s estimated that Netflix have spent more than $13 billion on original content for 2019 with Netflix themselves saying that number is likely to increase.

To compare, the BBC have spent the equivalent of $2 billion.

Despite this success, shares dipped slighter after fourth quarter revenue (which was up 27% from 2017) didn’t reach analyst expectations.

It was announced this week that the USA and certain Latin American countries would be raising subscription prices from $11 to $13 a month.

Despite this rise, the service will still be charging similar prices as it’s competitors Hulu and Amazon, which charge $12 and $13 a month respectively.
