Kent MPs react to Brexit negotiation progress

By Alex Crean, reporter

Thanet South MP Craig Mackinlay has dismissed Chancellor Philip Hammond’s fears that a no deal Brexit is a “ticking time bomb”.

Speaking to Kent Current, Mr. Mackinlay described how he sees the Government’s current position, with the first deal being rejected by parliament last week.

Mr. Mackinlay added: “If a similar document comes back to the Common’s on Monday it will be rejected again.

“It certainly doesn’t suit me, and I doubt any of my colleagues that didn’t support it before will support it now”.

Stances like this, on both sides of the debate, have created deadlock in the Commons. Many in government now feel that their stance should be relaxed, with some of the Prime Ministers red lines abandoned.

However, Mackinlay and many others disagree with this, Mr. Mackinlay said: “The government has already given too much away. There are quite a number of red lines in there that I would like to see tightened up, the Irish Backstop and the £39 billion bill.”

“Unless the EU starts to blink, the UK will leave with no deal. I have no fears about that, I call it a clean global Brexit.”

In sharp contrast to this, Gordon Henderson MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey, again expressed his desire to see the UK exit the UK with a good deal. Mr. Henderson stated that he could support a Brexit deal that put a time limit on the backstop on the Irish border.

Mr Henderson said: “I want us to be able to withdraw from the EU in a measured way, including a transitional period, the remaining UK financial liabilities and agreements in citizen rights”.

In a Kent Current Exclusive, Thanet South MP Craig Mackinlay also reflected on his recent acquittal for breaking electoral spending rules, and his campaign to seek reform of the law.
