Lovell: “We are the underdogs, so I feel the pressure is on Swansea.”

Gillingham manager Steve Lovell has said that there is every possibility of a second ‘giant killing’ when they face off against Swansea City on Saturday, but has warned his team cannot afford to lose focus for even a second.

Gillingham advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup after beating Cardiff City in the previous round, thanks to an Elliott List strike in the 81st minute.

In a press conference on Thursday, Lovell said he is looking forward to heading back to his hometown to face his childhood club, but he has not forgotten he is there to do a job.

“I’ve been away from Swansea for a long, long time. That was where I was born and grew up, but this is my home now, in Gillingham,” Lovell said.

Lovell attended Swansea games as a child with his late father, and began his playing career there.

However, despite the imminent task Lovell has at hand, he has said he will make sure he enjoys returning home, and will relish the opportunity to see some old faces.

“My mum can’t wait for us to go down there,” Lovell revealed.

“All my family from up here will be going down, so I feel it’ll be a big Lovell reunion after the match!”

“Hopefully we can be celebrating a good performance and a good result too.”

In team news, Max Ehmer looks set to return to the first team following a spell on the sidelines after his shoulder dislocation against Scunthorpe. Lovell was also keen to address rumours that are still circulating around Tom Eaves, and his proposed move away in the January window.

“Tom’s committed to us,” Lovell said.

“I’ve said it before, he’s a great pro and a great player, he wears the badge with pride and as long as he is here I’m sure he’ll keep doing that.”

Gillingham’s clash with Swansea City will kick off at 3pm on Saturday, 26th January, with coverage of the match being handled by Sky, BBC and Gillingham FC’s media.
