That’s it for us here. Another Academy Award ceremony has passed, another group of overly-enthusiastic people have lost their time, Jay’s happy but I’m not.

Bohemian Rhapsody was the biggest winner of the night (for some reason) with Roma bagging three awards but failing to take home Best Picture. Black Panther surprising many by clinching three Oscars, more than the Favourite and Vice combined.

In a year with no clear Favourite (get it?), Green Book won the top prize of the night. We still feel a bit weird about fifty white people talking onstage about the importance of race relations, but whatever I guess people liked it and Mahershala Ali was there right?

It was quite an underwhelming ceremony that seemed to lack energy. As much criticism as the hosts of these awards come under, it did feel as if there needed to be an individual trying to liven up the event and tie everything together. The Academy needs to look at themselves in the mirror and figure out what kind of show they want to put on because they don’t seem to know what they’re doing.

Anyway, that’s enough complaining from us. We’ve had fun covering the awards and hope you enjoyed it too. Time for bed.

04.42

24 awards were up for grabs, 24 chances to win Kent Current’s prediction list but it was Jay who took home the coveted award with 16 correct predictions. I finished in second place with 14 but that’s a story for another day. Well done Jay!

04.30

Green Book took home the award for Best Picture. In a poll, we made earlier today 64% of you voted for Roma to win the prize, however, it was the 36% who were right to back Green Book.

04.26

Cuaron’s winning run tonight comes to an end as Green Book picks up the top award of the night, Best Picture. The feel-good nature of the movie probably counted in its favour, as Best Picture is voted on a preferential ballot. Another instance where there is are two different movies winning Best Director and Best Picture. Mixed feelings here. God, I loved Roma.

04.14

Alfonso Cuaron takes home his third Oscar. It’s the second time he wins the award for Best Director after receiving the same accolade for his work in Gravity. He makes the second part of his speech in Spanish and I’m (Ken) the only one that can understand him in this room.

It’s also the fifth time in the last six years that a Mexican director has won Best Director (Cuaron x2, Iñarritu x2 and Guillermo del Toro)

04.08

Olivia Colman wins the Best Actress Oscar. It’s a well-deserved win for an incredible performance. It’s the only win for The Favourite tonight, which is nice to see because I thought the film was great.

Olivia Colman blows a raspberry to the teleprompter telling her to wrap up after a wonderfully endearing and giggly speech.

But most importantly, Ken thought this award was going to Glenn Close, which means I can no longer be caught. He gloated when he beat me last year, but he is awfully quiet now.

03.53

I (Jay) need one more correct prediction to secure my win in the Kent Current Oscar predictions. But will that win be a solo victory, or will Ken catch me? Tense moments ahead.

03.50

Rami Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury wins him the Best Actor Oscar. I never thought Malek would top his role as Pharaoh Ahkmenrah in Night at the Museum but I guess the Academy disagrees.

03.35

As we head into the ‘Big 4’ (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress), this is how the prediction list is looking. Jay still holds the lead with 13 correct predictions with myself (Ken) and Luke closing in on him. It will be a photo-finish.

03.30

Lady Gaga wins her first (and only?) Oscar of the night with Shallow, the song we all knew was going to win. She says it’s not all about “winning” as she collects another accolade in her already stellar career.

03.28

Ludwig Goransson wins the Oscar for Best Original Score for his work on Black Panther. Even though I didn’t have it predicted to win, kind of happy about it because I’ve been a fan of his since his work on the TV show Community.

03.20

Spike Lee finally wins an Oscar! The acclaimed director wins his first Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay with BlackKklansman. He ends his speech by saying “Let’s do the right thing!”, to which he receives a standing ovation.

03.18

Green Book wins the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. It’s yet another award that doesn’t go to The Favourite. It started the night as the joint highest nominee with 10, but its chances of picking up some kind of Oscar gold are looking slimmer by the moment.

03.11

Skin wins Best Live Action Short. That’s all I know about the movie. Onto the next category…

03.05

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are performing this song called Shallow. Sounds alright. Reckon it could be a sleeper hit. All jokes aside, Gaga’s bit in the song where she just makes consonant-less wailing sounds gets me hyped every time I hear it.

03.03

First Man wins its one and only Oscar of the night for Best Visual Effects. This win surely means a lot to Damien Chazelle but it arguably means as much to me (Jay) because now Ken can only tie me in the Oscar prediction game.

02.50

Period. End of Sentence wins Best Short Documentary and I’m (Ken) the happiest guy in the room as I had it on my prediction list. I’ve heard it’s good too.

02.48

The Oscar for Best Animated Short goes to Bao because it’s the only animated short that people actually saw. It’s also might be better than the film it was shown before (Incredibles 2). Is that a hot take?

02.46

Dana Carvey and Mike Myers come to the stage to introduce Best Picture nominee Bohemian Rhapsody but here at the Kent Current Oscar party, we’re struggling to decide whether Mike looks more like Brett Kavanaugh or Alex Jones (of InfoWars, not The One Show)

02.43

We’ve hit the middle of the ceremony and Jay is still in the lead. There’s still plenty to play for here.

02.36

Third song of the evening not called “Shallow”. It’s a nice spectacle but one can only wonder when are Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper coming on the stage.

02.35

Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse completes its awards sweep by winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Callum described it as ‘one of the best animated films of all time’ in his review of the film .

02.32

Did Laura Dern really just put an Academy Museum ad in the middle of the show. Why? Is this not long enough already?

02.30

Ad break so we are back with the prediction list. Jay ties Luke at the top and I am starting to believe this game is rigged. Perhaps Jay and Luke know someone in the Academy who knows, anyway the Oscars are back on the telly…

02.25

Mahershala Ali wins his 2nd Oscar in 3 years. No surprises here, unlike the rest of the ceremony.

02.23

John Ottman wins the award for Best Editing for Bohemian Rhapsody. Some say it’s because of how accurate the Live Aid sequence. Others say it’s because he’s had to put up with Bryan Singer for so most of his career.

02.17

We keep getting tweets from all over the world. Our reporter Brad Grey tweets his support for Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma.

Don’t forget to tweet to us at @kentcurrent

02.11

Keegan-Michael Key flys down on an umbrella to introduce the Mary Poppins Returns song, The Place Where Lost Things Go. It will be hard to top that entrance tonight.

02.09

What a surprise! Roma wins Best Foreign Film! No one is shocked as Cuaron wins his second Oscar of the night. We are kept wondering how many speeches has he written.

02.05

Luke takes the lead in Kent Current’s prediction list. It would be an understatement to say that both of us (Jay and I) are upset about it.

02.00

Best Sound Editing goes to Bohemian Rhapsody. Considering that it faced tougher competition in this category compared to Sound Mixing, surely it has that in the bag as well?

Update: I was right, Bohemian Rhapsody wins Best Sound Mixing. In the words of Kent Current reporter Callum McAvoy “They’re the same thing anyway”.

01.54

Ad break now, so we have an update on our prediction list. Frazer and Luke join me and Jay in the top, while Jess and Isabel get their first points.

There are plenty of awards left…

01.48

No surprises here as Alfonso Cuaron receives the award for Best Cinematography for his work in Roma. He is also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. This could be a big night for him.

01.45

Black Panther with the quick one-two punch as it wins Best Production Design. Hannah Beachler collects the award and is in tears with her speech talking about perseverance. Really moving stuff.

01.42

So, it’s not only me (Ken) and Jay watching the Oscars on our own. Against all odds, we have friends, who reluctantly agreed to participate in our yearly tradition of attempting to predict the awards. We will be bringing you updates on it as it develops…

01.41

INTERNET UPDATE: Our awards viewing is now stable. Big thanks to Manav’s data plan.

01.40

Ruth E. Carter wins the Best Costume Design award for her work on Black Panther. This is her third nomination but the last time she was nominated was 1998. She is the first African American woman to win this award.

01.36

Vice wins Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Last year’s winner, Darkest Hour, also featured it lead actor under heavy prosthetics. Oldham then went on to win Best Actor later that night. A good sign of things to come for Christian Bale maybe?

01.25

Let us know your thoughts on the Oscars by tweeting @kentcurrent. It’s definitely not just to keep us updated because of our shoddy Sky Go stream.

01.18

Free Solo wins Best Documentary Feature film. We hear it’s an amazing documentary. The Academy clearly agrees.

01.15

Regina King is the first winner of the night upsetting The Favourite’s Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz (and yes, we meant that pun). This her first win on her first nomination.

01.02

In lieu of an actual host, we have Queen performing a medley instead of a monologue. Wait, Freddie Mercury looks different…

00.59

Quick word of warning, our internet at the moment is not, as the kids say, good. So, this is going to be fun, isn’t it?

00.30

Hello, and welcome to Kent Current’s coverage of the 91st Annual Academy Awards. You could be following along with a more established publication, but that’s just a safe choice. Like Shallow for Best Original Song. Fun fact – it’s the only unanimous pick in the Kent Current Oscar ballot. More on that later.

You’ll be with me (Jay) and Ken throughout the night. We’ll be talking you through all the highs and lows, the winners and losers, and every self-indulgent movie montage that this Oscars has to offer. It’s going to be a long one but we’ll get through them together.
