German celebrations in Deal – restaurant takes on Oktoberfest

A restaurant in Deal is digging up its German heritage as it takes part in the traditional celebration of Oktoberfest.

The Lane in Southcourt, owned by Anna Murray and Chris Vindler, is expecting a high turn-out as the weekend approaches, but the pair are no strangers to the event having adopted it for the third successful year in a row.

Murray herself has German family which sparked the interest in Oktoberfest.

The 16 day event originated from Munich where Oktoberfest Beer is consumed. Fairground rides and stalls are usually available as well to attract huge numbers of visitors.

Although it originated in Bavaria, much of the world celebrate the tradition – from China all the way to South Africa.

The restaurant will be cooking up a German themed menu as well as their regular options. Visitors can expect schweinshaxe, a type of slow-cooked pork with dumplings, and Huhner schnitzel, breaded chicken with sautéed potatoes, among other German treats.

The Oktoberfest celebrations have been running since Monday and will continue to Friday, October 14. Booking is highly recommended.
