£10 000 reward for the return of two missing endangered macaws “My head tells me they’re gone, but my heart says they’re still out there” says the owner of the Fenn Bell Inn in Saint Mary Hoo

The owner of the Fenn Bell Inn, Andy Cowell, 54, is offering a £10 000 for the safe return of his two macaws.

The endangered birds were stolen from the Fenn Bell Inn’s conservation centre in Saint Mary Hoo on the 11th September at 11pm. CCTV footage shows three men entering the conservation centre, breaking open the bird cages and throwing the birds into a large bag. They were also seen pulling the birds’ feathers out and violently swinging the bag around.

The Kent police press office said that the incident has been investigated, but there are no outstanding lines of enquiry and the case has been filed pending until any further information coming to light.

One bird is a blue and gold macaw, and the other, a green wing. Both are endangered species of macaws.

Andy started a crowdfunding page to receive donations, which will go to increasing the security of the enclosures to protect the other animals. He also plans to open an on-site vet centre, conduct educational school visits next year.

Andy hopes to get businesses to sponsor enclosures for the remaining animals at the Fenn Bell Inn.

Andy hopes that his missing macaws are still out there: “It’s been a few weeks and my heart is saying they’re still out there, but my head is saying they’ve been sold and shipped off to another country.

“As a family it has caused much upset to us to think while we were asleep someone has broken in and taken them away from us. I cannot put in words the anger I have for what they’ve done.

“It pains me to say it but we will be going into the second week of our birds being missing. I cannot rest until our birds are returned to us.”

Andy opened the Fenn Bill Inn conservation centre after his wife became fed up of him turning their garden into a zoo.

“I had many animals before I had the pub and they were all in my garden. It was basically a mini zoo. So I thought, let’s start one then.”

He decided to open a pub, so he could have land space to build his conservation centre. He also so liked the idea that people could order a drink or some food, and enjoy their experience at his zoo.

“It’s nice when everyone can have some food and drink as well as a zoo right at the centre of it all.”

The conservation centre now has monkeys, meerkats, leemurs, foxes, racoons, vultures, owls and many more other wildlife creatures.
