Gills sign new goalkeeper Tomas Holy

New Gillingham boss Ady Pennock has made his first signing of the transfer window by acquiring Czech goalkeeper Tomas Holy on a free transfer.

The former-Sparta Prague stopper stands at six-foot-nine and signed a two-and-a-half-year contract on Friday morning after a successful weeklong trial.

Pennock labelled this January transfer window “frustrating” as he struggles to add to the squad he inherited from former gaffer Justin Edinburgh.

He said: “There’s two or three that we’re talking to but it’s not for the lack of trying. It’s got to be right for the football club. Myself and the chairman are working hard behind the scenes and I can tell you its hours upon hours that we’re working on it.”

Chairman Paul Scally sacked Justin Edinburgh at the turn of the new year and handed the Gill’s 2000 League Two play-off captain the reigns alongside fellow first-team coaches Steve Lovell and Jamie Day.

Pennock continued: “Me and the chairman are working hard together but you may have to be a little more patient. It’s got to be the right players for us and obviously financially it’s got to be right. We don’t want to get anyone in willy-nilly.”

The Gills boss refused to reveal the exact positions he is looking to bolster but it is believed that he is interested in adding some much-needed experience to a young defence.

Pennock may also be looking for fast wingers as he has admitted that he cherishes the pace and directness that the newly installed Elliot List brings to the side.

The month has also seen Frank Nouble’s short-term deal come to an end whilst promising youngsters Bailey Cargill and Jonathan Bond returned to their respective parent clubs Bournemouth and Reading.
