Gillingham vs Charlton; a derby crucial to both side’s season

Derbies are always the most important dates in a football fan’s calendar. Yet this Saturday’s local clash with Charlton may be of even more importance to Gillingham fans as they look for their first win in six league games. Gills manager Justin Edinburgh claims to know just what this fixture means to the fans and insists his players are up to the challenge.

The Gills are without some key players through injury and suspension, problems they have struggled with all season.

Edinburgh was initially coy on a verbal altercation with a fan after the final whistle on Tuesday but then explained what really happened.

The Gills drew 1-1 with Walsall and Edinburgh was happy to stop a run of four consecutive losses.

Cody McDonald scored the Gills’ only goal on Tuesday night and Edinburgh hopes his other players are inspired by the striker’s performance.

A mistake by goalkeeper Jonathan Bond allowed Walsall to equalise with a rebound, but the Gills manager insisted all his players must take responsibility.

Edinburgh compared his teams struggles with Premier League champions Leicester’s struggles this campaign.

Tuesday’s Man of the match Max Ehmer had a positive outlook on the game and what it means for the Gills’ season, whilst also maintaining Edinburgh has the players’ full support.

Will Gillingham be able to get their first win in almost a month on Saturday? Kick off is 3pm at Priestfield Stadium.
