Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has banned pornography in the country, after learning the Philippines spend more time per visit on the adult material than any other country.
The ban, which covers several major adult websites, now forbids access on PCs, laptops and mobile phones. Those who attempt to access such sites are redirected to a page notifying them of the ban, stating it is in accordance with Anti-Child Pornography Law.
The Vice President of Pornhub, Corey Price, told Mail Online that child pornography is strictly prohibited on the site, and the site is willing to work with government officials to meet the country’s standards.
President Duterte enacted the ban only ten days after Pornhub, the most popular adult site, released their statistics for 2016, which revealed that Filipinos spend almost two minutes longer per visit, at 12 min 45 sec, to the site than people in any other nation.
Gian Ortiz, 20, a film student from Manila, the country’s capital, said: “It doesn’t surprise me. The Philippines is one of the most sexually conservative countries in the world.
“In some parts of the Philippines, they don’t sell condoms because if you want to have sex, it’s for making children. Obviously, I disagree with that!”
Pew research centre reports that over 80% of Filipinos are Roman Catholics, which explains the country’s conservatism towards such matters.
Paradoxically, President Duterte announced ten days ago that free contraceptives will be offered to approximately six million women who cannot obtain them.
The Philippines is not the only nation to ban pornography online – China, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Thailand, Iceland, Egpyt and Pakistan all ban major sites. Russia banned access to many in September last year. Following complaints, they suggested users ‘meet someone in real life.’
