Our 5 top theories for Game of Thrones season 8

Before we begin, heres a handy countdown till the premiere!

Obviously a spoiler warning is action as we will be talking about events that has happened in the past 7 seasons. If you are not caught up to date, go catch up and come back to this article.

5. Sam Tarly is writing a song of Ice and Fire.

A fan-favourite theory, this one suggests that in the show Samwell Tarly represents George R.R. Martin. In 2014, Martin himself teased this possibility during a panel at Comic Con, “Tyrion might be who I want to be, but Sam is probably closer to who I actually am,” he said.

There were even clues within the series itself that supports this theory. In season 7, when Sam first enters the library in the Citadel, he sees spherical mobiles hanging from the ceiling. Which very closely resemble the mobiles that appear in the opening credits.

4. The Lannisters will cause their own downfall.

Even though Cersei herself, has admitted to Jaime that she is in no position to win the war against Daenerys, she has shown from the decision she has made throughout Season 7 that she’s not doing well. From destroying the Sept of Balor to torturing Ellaria Sand, by making her witness the death of her daughter. Cersei has shown how far she is willing to go in her endless quest for power.

According to one Reddit user, one decision Cersei may have overlooked was in fully repaying the Iron Bank:

Tywin was no fool and he knew that while the Lannisters were in debt to the Bank the Bank had a vested interest in their success. By paying the debt in full Cersei has allowed Tycho to wash his hands of the Lannisters altogether. After what we saw on the battlefield we have a good idea whose position is strongest and who the Bank would like to back. The irony of this theory is in this case the Lannisters are undone by paying their debt.

Tycho Nestoris, a representative of the Iron Bank, tells Cersei the Iron Bank will support the chosen victor of the Iron Throne once their debt is paid, not necessarily guaranteeing it will support the Lannisters.

Some fans believe that the Lannisters unpaid debt is what kept the Iron Bank interested in the affairs of House Lannister. Now that the debt is paid off, there is nothing obliging the Iron Bank to support Cersei. The irony of this theory is that the Lannisters are undone by paying their debt, because as we all know, A Lannister always pays his debts.

3. Arya will become Lady Stoneheart

Lady Stoneheart, a fan-favourite from the books has yet to make an appearance in the series. At this point, it is very unlikely that Lady Stark will make a reappearance in the TV show, but some fans think her storyline will be passed on to one of her daughters.

Sansa seems to be a very likely candidate for this now that she is finally safe to seek her revenge on all who have wronged her. Starting with Petyr Baelish who’s throat she slit at the end of Season 7.

However, Reddit user soccerperson thinks it’s much more likely that Arya, now a skilled mercenary would become a figure like Lady Stoneheart:

At this point, Arya is a force to be reckoned with. She’s essentially a silent assassin who is able to take out any opponent at will, while taking on the appearance of anyone she chooses.

I’m liking the theories that basically make her Lady Stoneheart. Because nobody sees Arya killing all these people, people of Westeros will create stories saying it’s the ghost of Catelyn Stark getting her revenge, and that’s how LSH will “show up” in the show

Though Arya doesn’t necessarily need to be dead to become a Lady Stoneheart-like figure, a recent interview with “Beyond the Wall” director Alan Taylor hinted that one of the Stark sisters is going to die soon, making the theory that much more plausible for one of them.

2. Jon will betray Daenerys

This is quite possibly one of the saddest fan theories out there. It says that Jon Snow will have to kill Daenerys in order to become the Prince Who Was Promised to finally kill the White Walkers for good.

This theory is based on the fact that Jon Snow is the Prince Who Was Promise, that is, a reborn Azor Ahai. He was a legendary hero who was forced to sacrifice his wife, Nissa Nissa, by plunging a sword through her heart to unleash its true power. This is how the powerful sword Lightbringer was created for Azor Ahai to defeat the god of darkness, or the Great Other. The legend goes on to say that the Prince Who Was Promised will one day pull Lightbringer from the fire once more to complete another hero’s journey.

If Jon is, in fact, the Prince Who Was Promised, and if he falls in love with Daenerys and marries her, this would make her his Nissa Nissa. This would mean that to stop the Night King, Jon would have to kill Daenerys. Honestly, Jon can’t catch a break with his love life.

1.Jamie will kill Cersei.

Jaime and Cersei Lannisters in King’s Landing

Based on the Valonqar theory, fans believe that Jamie will kill his twin Cersei to stop her tyrannical rule of Westeros. Just like how he killed the Mad King before her, Jaime will live up to his nickname, Kingslayer or better yet Queenslayer.

As a child, Cersei received a prophecy from Maggy the Frog, which states that, “she will marry the king, become queen, have three children, and watch all of them die.” In the books the prophecy goes even further, predicting that Cersei will die at the hands of “the Valonqar”. With the first three parts of the prophecy fulfilled, it stands to reason that the last part likely come true on the show, and here’s a fun fact, valonqar is Valerian for little brother.

While this could still mean Tyrion, it would be more poetic if Jamie was the one responsible for her death. This will, of course, require Jaime to have the courage to take down the person he loves most in the world to protect the realm.
