The Wrongens: An up and coming Sunday league team

The Wrongens FC, a North London based club founded in 2016 by Marios Diamantides, is a club made of friends who have known each other for years.

The Wrongens started playing competitive 11-a-side football in the 2017-18 season, playing in the Edmonton District Football Sunday League.

Mr Diamantides said: “Despite the Edmonton District Sunday football league not being a huge league, it’s been going on for a long time and has a lot of history.”

The league is England’s oldest Sunday League, which was formed in 1925.

The Wrongens played 2 seasons in the league, finishing 3rd in their 1st season and 2nd in their second season, narrowly missing out on the title by just two points. They did win the League Cup competition (the Jubilee Cup) both years they spent in the league.

Mr Diamantides found it best for The Wrongens to relocate to the Barnet Football Sunday League, where they currently compete in Division One.

“The league has more teams which means more competition and there’s a much better social media presence.”

The Wrongens are already reaping the benefits from the increased social media, possessing 268 subscribers on YouTube and has already hit over 1,000 views on several videos they’ve uploaded of their matches.

Sunday League football is a tradition in this country, and while it is a competitive league for football fans to play the sport they love, Mr Diamantides sees another side to it.

“The best part of Sunday League is of course to win and you get to lift up trophies with your friends, but it’s that feeling of being a footballer for one day that is a rewarding feeling.

It’s the feeling of living that professional football life that we dreamed of when we were kids, you can forget about work or exams and just enjoy that day of football.”

Sunday League has developed over the past few years and a lot of people have now become more interested in it.

The South-East London team, the SE Dons, founded by rapper Don Strapzy, have been billed as the most popular Sunday League team in the country and have 136k subscribers on YouTube and regularly get hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube.

Mr Diamantides is aware of the importance of social media in building the brand of The Wrongens. He said: “Putting content on sites like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook is important and recording goals and games like I do is needed because that’s what people want to see
