Since October is the month for all things spooky, we are trying to get our readers into the spirit of Halloween. Here’s a quick and easy list of the 10 best (and highly underrated) horror movies from recent years. If you’re not a fan of horror or are just a massive scaredy cat (there is no shame in being afraid) check out our other list that’s perfect for you:

But enough stalling let’s get started on the list…

Number 10 – The Awakening

If you’re a fan of suspense thrillers, The Awakening is the perfect movie for you. Set in 1921, the movie follows Florence Cathcart, an author who works to debunk supernatural hoaxes. She goes to a boarding school in Cumbria to try to uncover the hidden mystery of the strange hauntings at the school. Throughout her time there strange occurrences start to happen that challenge Florence’s beliefs. Starring the phenomenal Rebecca Hall and Dominic West, both actors do an amazing job to build the tension which all makes this movie a hidden gem and a must watch for any horror movie lovers.

Number 9 – Trick r Treat

A horror anthology set during a Halloween night about the importance of following the traditions of All Hallows Eve. Sam, a child like character dressed in an orange jumpsuit and has a burlap sack for a mask appears in all four stories whenever a character breaks an important tradition. Each story is unique and masterfully blends horror and comedy to create a movie that has ultimately become a modern cult classic. It’s a must watch for anyone looking to get into the Halloween spirit because the movie takes a deep dive into the classic traditions of the holiday.

Number 8 – Would You Rather

Now this pick is perfect for viewers who isn’t afraid of a little blood and gore. Would You Rather, cleverly turns the innocent game of chance into an intense fight for survival for the characters. The challenges start out innocent enough, convincing a vegetarian to eat steak, but they continue to escalate throughout the night until one player remains. What would you do if you had to pick between slicing your eye in half or removing all your teeth? Would you manage to survive the night?

Number 7 – 1408

No horror movie list or horror list can be complete without Stephen King making an appearance. With Doctor Sleep releasing on the 8th of November and It: Chapter 2 receiving praise from horror fans, this Halloween why not watch one of King’s lesser known film adaptations. 1408 is the movie adaptation of King’s short story of the same name, following Mike Enslin a successful author who enjoys worldwide acclaim debunking supernatural phenomena — before he checks into the Dolphin Hotel, that is. If you are able to get your hands on the theatrical cut, watch that one. The ending is so much better than the directors cut and completes Enslin’s character arc.

Number 6 – Funny Games

A remake of the 1997 Austrian movie of the same name, Funny Games is a brutal movie about senseless violence against an innocent family trying to enjoy their holiday with their son. At times the violence is shocking and makes viewers want to look away. Unlike most horror remakes, director Michael Haneke recreated his original movie scene-by-scene for English audiences. Critics have agreed that the psychological thriller is a stylish and darkly satirical movie that still holds up today.

Number 5 – Shutter (Thai version)

Our first Asian horror movie on the list (not the last though), Shutter is a Thai horror movie that will keep you up at night. An American version of the movie was made in 2008 but I would recommend the original Thai version. Why? Simply because the original movie is a million times better than the remake and in most cases when an Asian horror movie is remade for Western audiences, a lot of the subtle horror themes get lost in translation. This movie is definitely worth turning subtitles on for and if you have not seen a foreign language horror movie, Shutter is a perfect introduction to the genre.

Number 4 – Dead Silence

Any horror movie lover will know the name James Wan, the genius mind behind classics like Saw and The Conjuring. His name has become synonymous with horror, even though in recent years he has branched out to direct action movies. One of Wan’s lesser known works is Dead Silence, a horror movie that has all the tropes of a horror movie made in 2007, but it still holds up today. Giving modern movies like The Curse of La Llorona a run for its money. A must watch for James Wan fans who are looking for a good horror movie to sink their teeth into.

Number 3 – The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Don’t let the title of this movie fool you, there’s nothing gruesome or gory about this movie. The plot of the movie unfolds on a dark and stormy night when an unknown woman’s body, Jane Doe is sent to a mortuary for an autopsy to uncover how she died. As the night progresses, the father son duo start to learn theres more to Jane Doe that meets the eye, and learning how she died could end with them forfeiting their lives as well. The Autopsy of Jane Doe is the perfect movie to put on this Halloween if you’re not scared of things going bump in the night.

Number 2 – Hush

Hush is the perfect movie for people who dislike the horror genre. It is more like a thriller, with a masked stranger stalking a helpless deaf woman in her own home. The sound design in the movie is used to mimic the struggles Maddie faces as she tries to outsmart the killer and stay alive. At times we, the audience will not be able to hear anything and understand just how vulnerable Maddie is. With minimal blood and gore, this movie will appeal to people who hate mainstream horror flicks.

Number 1 – A Tale of Two Sisters

If you only watch one movie out of this entire list, please let it be this one. A Tale of Two Sisters is an absolute masterpiece of a movie. The horror mainly comes from the way the director builds up tension in the scenes. It’s a slow burn but when the final twist comes it will leave you shocked. Even the biggest horror movie lover will not be able to predict what will happen next. If I had to summarise this movie I would say that it is a psychological horror that explores the dynamics of a family struggling through their grief. Its a must watch and one of the most underrated horror movies of this decade.
